An OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) characterizes the optical fiber line under test in terms of attenuation and return loss, providing detailed information on the overall condition of the fiber communication medium. By transmitting light pulses based on the wavelength, pulse width, and test duration you specify, the OTDR collects data from the light reflected back to the unit from the end of the fiber line and calculates the results. Unfortunately, there are regions where OTDRs cannot perform measurements; these are known as Event Dead Zones and Attenuation Dead Zones. By examining the OTDR results, you can determine the following:
1. Whether there are connector-linked cables on the line and, if so, the loss value caused by that connector connection.
2. Whether there are spliced cables on the line and, if so, the loss value resulting from the splice.
3. Whether there is a "splitter" on the line and, if so, whether the loss falls within specified limits.
4. Whether there is a "macrobend" (bending of the fiber cable in a way that prevents light transmission at desired levels) on the line.
The OTDR evaluates the results above against pre-set pass/fail thresholds and provides a final "pass" or "fail" verdict.
CD/PMD tests are used to determine dispersion values that cannot be measured by an OTDR.

PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion) is the dispersion experienced by light components traveling in different polarization modes as they pass through a fiber core that deviates from ideal geometry.
